Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has recognized Barisan Nasional (BN) for its vital role in maintaining political stability in the state, a factor he believes has been key to the government’s ability to effectively carry out its responsibilities. Chow, a prominent leader in the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and a member of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, lauded the strong partnership between PH and BN, which he views as essential for the state’s governance and development.
At the Penang MIC Deepavali open house, Chow highlighted the contributions of BN’s component parties, including MIC, particularly during the 2023 state elections. He expressed his appreciation for their ongoing support in furthering his administration’s efforts to improve the welfare of Penang residents.
"Political stability is the foundation for any government to deliver its promises to the people. Through this cooperation, we have been able to push for social and economic progress that directly benefits the people of Penang," said Chow in his address.
He also spoke highly of the unity government formed by the collaboration between PH, BN, and other parties, pointing out how this alignment had created a strong framework for effective governance. Chow credited Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership for establishing trust and confidence in the administration, both locally and internationally.
Additionally, Chow praised Musa Sheikh Fadzir, the Penang BN and Umno chief, for his instrumental role in strengthening ties between BN and PH. "The outcome of the 2023 state election is a reflection of what we can achieve when we unite our efforts. This unity has led to impressive results for all involved," he stated.
In the 2023 state elections, the PH-BN alliance won 29 of the 40 seats, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) secured 11. DAP won all 19 seats it contested, PKR claimed seven out of 13, and Amanah held onto one of its two seats. BN managed to capture two of the six seats it contested, with Rashidi Zinol from Sungai Acheh joining Chow’s state executive council.
Looking to the future, Chow emphasized the importance of maintaining this collaborative spirit to address future challenges, particularly in the lead-up to the next general election in three years.
Chow also took a moment to express his gratitude for attending Penang MIC’s first Deepavali event in 15 years. As part of the celebration, state MIC chief J Dhinagaran and other party members surprised Chow with a flower garland to mark his 65th birthday, which had been celebrated the previous day.
Former Penang Chief Minister and DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng also attended the event, further reinforcing the unity between the various political factions in Penang.
