Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia
He is a seasoned statesman and one of the country’s most influential political figures. Appointed on November 24, 2022, his leadership marks the culmination of a decades-long journey in Malaysian politics, defined by resilience, reform, and a steadfast commitment to justice and equity.
Born on August 10, 1947, in Penang, Anwar’s early activism began during his university days, where he championed social justice and student rights. He entered politics in the 1980s and quickly rose through the ranks of UMNO, holding key positions including Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister. During his tenure, Malaysia experienced significant economic growth, and Anwar was celebrated for his vision of governance rooted in transparency and accountability.
Anwar’s political career, however, is equally defined by his challenges. Following his dismissal in 1998, he spearheaded the Reformasi movement, advocating for democracy, institutional reform, and the eradication of corruption. Despite personal and political setbacks, his perseverance and vision for a united, progressive Malaysia inspired generations of Malaysians.
As Prime Minister, Anwar has emphasized inclusive governance, focusing on economic resilience, social welfare, and unity across Malaysia’s diverse society. His administration seeks to address critical issues such as cost of living, equitable development, and institutional integrity.
Renowned globally, Anwar is also an intellectual, writer, and advocate of interfaith dialogue, earning recognition as a progressive leader in the Islamic world. His leadership philosophy blends economic pragmatism with moral values, resonating with both domestic and international audiences.
Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s journey reflects his deep-rooted commitment to building a just, prosperous, and united Malaysia, underpinned by his vision of reform and inclusivity. As Malaysia moves forward under his leadership, he continues to inspire hope for a better future.
Speaking at the 7th China International Import Expo (CIIE) at Shanghai’s National Exhibition and Convention Centre (NECC), Anwar praised Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent address at the BRICS conference in Kazan as "spectacular."
Anwar highlighted Xi’s call to embrace the spirit of a shared future to combat discord and protectionism. "This approach emphasizes building a global community that prioritizes peace, security, and the sharing of expertise and technology," he said.
Malaysia Honoured at CIIE
This year, Malaysia holds the prestigious title of "Country of Honour" at the CIIE, which runs from November 5 to 10 under the theme “New Era Shared Future.”
Anwar delivered his speech after Chinese Premier Li Qiang, alongside leaders from France, Nicaragua, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, and Uzbekistan.
Acknowledging Li’s address, Anwar commended China’s governance and policies, particularly its efforts to promote fair trade and economic prosperity for the global community.
“China’s leadership stands out for rejecting outdated and unfair trade practices, ensuring global trade and investments benefit all, including smaller enterprises,” Anwar remarked.
Multicultural Cooperation for Global Progress
Anwar stressed the importance of using free trade and sustainability initiatives as tools for equitable global progress rather than for fostering competition or conflict.
“The CIIE serves as a vital platform for countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to showcase their innovations and attract investments,” he noted.
Strengthening Asean-China Cooperation
Looking ahead to Malaysia’s chairmanship of Asean in 2025, Anwar emphasized the nation’s goal to advance regional cooperation through an inclusive and rules-based framework.
“We aim to integrate China’s forward-looking shared future principle into the Asean-GCC plus China Summit, fostering regional growth and promoting fairness in trade and investment,” Anwar stated.
He further acknowledged Asean’s position as the world’s fifth-largest economy, underscoring its potential to drive inclusive socio-economic growth and sustainability.
Inspired by China’s Success
Drawing inspiration from China’s success in poverty reduction, Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to good governance, anti-corruption efforts, and socio-economic reforms to achieve shared prosperity.
Malaysia-China Relations
Anwar’s working visit to China from November 4 to 7 highlights the strong economic ties between the two nations. For 15 consecutive years, China has been Malaysia’s largest trading partner.
During his visit, Anwar opened the Malaysia Pavilion and the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) Pavilion at the NECC, featuring participation from 68 Malaysian companies.
This collaboration reflects Malaysia’s commitment to leveraging its partnership with China to promote global trade and regional cooperation.
